“We can’t always choose the music life plays at us but we can choose how we dance to it.
When it comes to the world of work, the last year has seen a seismic change in attitudes as well as changes in the way we work and view work. As economies now open up (albeit cautiously in some regions), we are entering uncharted waters. While many may live in hope of life returning to how it was in 2019, we may have to wait a while because this would require the whole world being fully (double) vaccinated, a monumental task given current (worldwide vaccination data). According to the NYT, only around 45% of Americans have been fully vaccinated while in Africa, only around 3% of people have received their first vaccination.
There’s no question that Covid will have a long lasting impact globally. Indeed, if history is anything to go by, then this experience will also cause a period of chaos and opportunity.
While these are indeed challenging times, the new norm of hybrid working that many companies have adopted and adapted (with some even considering the fully distributed working model), the leaders who will be better at navigating the choppy waters that lie ahead, will have to run adaptable, flexible, lean and agile teams and/or organisations. In addition, a recent survey by Slack found that 56% of those surveyed (10,000 people in over 10 countries), said they were now open to looking for new jobs and many did not favour returning to the office everyday. It seems that in the knowledge economy in some large countries such as the USA and UK, the war for talent has already begun. This is therefore an opportunity for candidates from around the world with leadership ambitions, to put their hat in the ring. It’s also an opportunity for recruiters from larger economies to diversify their talent pool and to recruit, build, innovative, dynamic, diverse teams using talent from around the world.
